Dry weather: Water your garden early in the morning. Apply a heavy mulch around but not touching the stems of your plants. This will keep the weeds down and the moisture from evaporating too quickly. Add compost and cultivate the soil before watering. If your garden boasts of an irrigation system, remember to sprinkle as well. This washes the dust from the leaves and adds needed moisture to the entire plant. Forecast for rain: Fertilize before the rain begins to fall. If you spray your Roses with soapy water to keep away the insects, remember to redo after a rain. After the rain, check your yard and garden for standing water which may become stagnant and welcome mosquito breeding. Wind, too, can "burn" plants, especially in coastal areas. Place windbreaks throughout your garden to prevent windburn. |

| "O, Grant that in some way it may rain every day, say from about midnight until three o'clock in the morning....Gentle and warm so that it can soak in;...that there may be plenty of dew and little wind, enough worms, no plant-lice and snails, no mildew, and that once a week thin liquid manure and guano may fall from heaven." The Gardener's Year; The Gardener's Prayer, Karel Capel | ||||||||
