Patio Garden

Live in a condo or apartment with little gardening space? Is your sun-space limited? Because most patios, large or small, are made of concrete, brick or stone floors, container gardening provides interesting and novel ways to decorate your patio. Using planter boxes provides much needed drainage for your plants. The boxes should be at least 18 inches deep and can be built with wood specifically treated for outdoor use or cedar wood. Line inside of box with black plastic. The plastic will prevent chemicals in the treated wood from seeping into the soil.

Each plant requires a certain amount of space for proper growth. This will determine the size of the planters. Holes should be drilled in the bottom piece of the planter for drainage. Also cut holes in the plastic over the holes. Wheels can also be attached for ease of movement. You can use plastic or metal trays under the boxes to catch the drainage and protect the flooring from damage. When the garden season is over, you can cover the planter with a piece of wood and use as a bench and/or storage.

Instead of wooden planters, you can use pots made of plastic or clay in different sizes. The moisture in clay pots evaporates more quickly. Check these pots more often for moisture content. The pots should also have drainage trays.

Be sure to use galvanized hardware.
